Fest History
The Akron Independent Film Festival was founded by Rob Lucas in 2002. He ran the event at The University of Akron’s Gardner Student Center that year and the next. In 2006 and 2007, the UA student filmmaking organization “The 2380 Project” hosted the fest at the new Student Union Theater. In September 2007, a new team of five board members, drawn from “The 2380 Project” and the community, incorporated the festival and attained 501(c)3 nonprofit status. In July 2009, the organization's name was changed to simply “Akron Film” to accommodate our growing range of programs.
