Program 2010We're at Art in the Square all day today, and you certainly should be too. The day will be full of concerts and other events, not to mention the 120+ exhibitors lining West Market Street in Highland Square. We are handing out 2010 Akron Film Festival programs, which contain the film schedule! It will be online this weekend as well [here's the PDF], but in the meantime, here are trailers for some of the feature films in store for September 23-26, 2010.

Obselidia / New Low / Air Doll (will be shown with English subtitles) / Sons of Perdition / Rhythmic Uprising

Tickets are now on sale! The activity registration form is coming this week.

Sadie Benning - Girl PowerThursday, August 19th's edition of Film Club will focus on filmmaker Sadie Benning, who was made famous by the videos she made in her bedroom with a Fisher-Price Pixelvision camera. We'll look at three of her short works. It is rare to get the chance to see them:

Jollies (1990) - With her disarming style -- juxtaposing pop music, toys, and written notes with frank revelations about her intimate experiences -- teenage Benning traces her discovery of her lesbian identity.
Girl Power (1992) - Backed by a Riot Grrrl soundtrack (she'd later be part of the band Le Tigre with Bikini Kill's Kathleen Hanna), Benning uses her imagination as a weapon against female stereotypes and alienation, and strives for a radical independence.
The Judy Spots (1995) - These five comic examinations of life as a young girl passively traveling through an oppressive world were created with paper-mâché puppets. They aired on MTV in 1998.

We're glad to have Alaina Arney, VP of the University of Akron's gender equality student organization Liberation in Progress, to moderate the discussion after the videos. It's happening Thursday, August 19th at 7pm at the Akron Art Museum, and it's free and open to anyone!
